Summary: Clark wants to have and give a second chance

"Superman is dead."

Lex froze. "Pardon?"

"Superman is dead." His butler repeated.

Lex growled, pain he didn't know he could even feel anymore surged through his body, constricting the heart he'd thought long dead, in agonising grief. "No!" he shouted, leaping at the man. "No!" he screamed again as they fell to the ground, Lex landing on top of the servant.

"He can't die," Lex howled, smashing the man's head into the floor, "He can't, he can't..." Lex's eyes stung and kept on smacking the butler's head into the floor, trying to relieve the pain. "He can't leave me," he whispered, dropping his head onto the bloody mess, "He can't." Lex's voice broke on a sob.

The funeral was a national event, but Clark didn't care, Superman was dead, what did it matter to him? He was so goddamned tired. Tired of being Clark Kent, tired of being Superman, tired of fighting to save the whole fucking planet. But mostly tired of fighting Lex.

Where had it all gone wrong? They had been so close, the best of friends... but it hadn't been enough. Clark had been so sure that Lex would be a good man, be the good man he believed in. But apparently their friendship hadn't been enough.

And it hurt so much, so fucking much, because he'd loved Lex, been *in* love with him... still was. No matter what had happened over the years, no matter what Lex had done to hurt him, he couldn't help it. Clark was still in love with Lex.

He hadn't gone to the funeral, but he was damned if he wasn't going to say goodbye. Lex stood in front of the grave, staring at the mounds of flowers and cards behind it, resting against the memorial.

So many regrets, he had too many. Clark had been the one good thing in his life, his best friend, the only one who'd treated him like he was worth more than a name and a billion dollar fortune. He'd still managed to blow it though.

Lex sighed and knelt down. "You could have saved me too, Clark," he whispered. "Why did you have to lie to me?" Bowing his head, Lex felt his eyes sting again, an unfamiliar, but somehow welcome, discomfort.

Clark *had* been his best friend, but it hadn't stopped him from lying. And Lex hadn't been able to handle it. Eventually, they'd fought about it so badly, Lex had just up and left Smallville.

He couldn't have stayed, knowing that the one person who had the most power over him, didn't trust him. But it hadn't stopped him from loving Clark, ever. Even when Superman had appeared and he'd finally realised just what Clark's secret was, he couldn't stop loving his farm boy.

The tears flowed freely and Lex didn't try to stop them, he just let himself sob, clutching at the gravestone. No matter how often he'd tried to kill Clark, he'd always thought Clark would outlive him, that Clark would always be there, even if it wasn't for him.

"I'll always love you," he whispered, pressing a kiss to the top of the marble. He got to his feet and slowly walked away, not looking back.

Clark tried to tell himself he was being stupid, but that didn't stop him from going to see his grave. Gently, he floated over the gates of the cemetery and towards the massive memorial.

When the simple gravestone came into view, Clark stopped. A solitary figure was standing in front of it. He could see the moonlight glowing off a bald head, and he knew, just knew that it was Lex. His heart leapt into his throat and his breath hitched.

Why? Why was Lex there?

Clark stayed well back and hidden in the shadows, tuning his hearing and sight onto the slim figure. When Lex dropped to his knees, Clark was so surprised, he nearly didn't catch the whispered words.

"You could have saved me too, Clark."

Clark's eyes burned. "I wanted to," he sighed.

"Why did you have to lie to me?"

"I'm so sorry, Lex," Clark let the tears go. Lying to Lex had been and would always be his second biggest regret. His first was that he'd never told his friend how much he loved him.

Clark wrapped his arms round his chest watching in horror, surprise and overwhelming sorrow as his former best friend sobbed over his grave and cried for their lost friendship.

Finally Lex drew back. "I'll always love you," he whispered, dropping kiss onto the gravestone.

Clark gasped. Love? Love him? "Oh God, Lex."

It took every ounce of self control and willpower for Clark not to rush over and grab Lex, speed them away and make up for lost time. It couldn't work now, wouldn't work now. Clark couldn't save Lex anymore.
