Summary: Why does Clark keep getting romantic text messages?
For Ghini, happy birthday honey
The vibration in his pocket made him jump, until he remembered his new phone. Clark grinned, his first message on his *new* phone. Naturally he’d given *everyone* the number as soon as he’d got it. Who would have sent his first text?
Clark’s excitement turned to confusion as he read the message:
‘Sweetness and light depicts the character of your being. You shine in a world of dullness and mediocrity, and chase away my darkness. Happy birthday, my angel.’
Maybe it was a mistake, a wrong number. It wasn’t as though he was the only one with a birthday that day. Kinda strange though. Clark sighed, saving the message, because it *was* really sweet, and he did sort of wish it was for him, and put it out of his mind.

Clark had almost forgotten about the message; until he got the next one.
It had been a long, hard day, rescuing Lex and several others from a bank heist. It had been terrifying for the brief moment he’d thought he was going to lose Lex; something he really didn’t want to go through again.
At least it hadn’t been a meteor mutant this time. Still, the bruises from the bullets he taken for Lex, while less painful than the previous times he’d been shot, were making him uncomfortable. His phone beeping distracted him.
‘Your courage amazes me, your foolhardiness terrifies me. Take better care of yourself, your loss would devastate not just me, my angel.'
Clark stared at the message. Apparently it *was* for him. Who on earth would be sending him messages like that? And why call him angel?
It was weird and confusing.

Clark read the text slowly, with a tiny smile. He’d been getting them every day for a month now, all of them sweet, loving, and all of them calling him angel. Clark was dying to know who was sending them.
‘Your body touches me, your mind inspires me, your soul completes me; you give me life, my sweet angel.’
“Another one?” Chloe exclaimed, peering over his shoulder. Clark jerked it away from her view in annoyance. “Your stalker is certainly prolific.”
Clark scowled, “It’s not a stalker, Chloe.”
“How’s our angel today?” Pete snickered.
“God, I wish I’d never told you guys,” Clark sighed.
“Oh come on, Clark. If your friends can’t tease you about a secret admirer, who can?” Pete scoffed.
“You’re supposed to be helping me find out who it is, remember?” Clark said quietly. He knew who he wished it was; not that he’d ever tell them. Ever since the bank heist, he’d come to realise that he was rather sadly and desperately in love with Lex.
But there was no chance. Lex’s manner hadn’t changed in the slightest. Not even the tiniest hint that it could be him.
Most of the messages were very short, but occasionally they indicated that it *was* someone he was close to. And that was all he knew.
“Whatever.” Pete smirked at him.
Clark shook his head and sighed.

Hearing the familiar footsteps approaching, Clark didn’t bother to turn round. He didn’t really want to see anyone right now, so he wasn’t going to pretend he was anything but depressed.
“Clark?”
“Hi, Lex,” Clark said quietly.
“Are you okay?” Lex asked just as quietly.
Clark shrugged, “Not really.”
Lex sat on the couch behind him. “Anything you want to talk about?”
Clark sighed, I love you and you don’t love me? “Not really,” he repeated. He turned to look at his friend, smiling ruefully at the soft concern in Lex’s eyes.
“I’m just tired,” Clark said, hoping to ease the worry.
“Why have you been avoiding me?” Lex asked softly.
With another sigh, Clark dropped his head back and stared up at the ceiling. He *had* been avoiding Lex, he wasn’t going to lie about that, even if he was going to lie about the reason.
“I’ve been avoiding everyone, Lex. It’s just something I’m going through right now.”
“Come here.” Lex beckoned to him. Clark sat down next to Lex, surprised when his friend slipped an arm round his shoulders. Lex wasn’t normally very demonstrative, even with him.
Sighing quietly, Clark rested his head in the crook of Lex’s neck. His friend didn’t speak, just sat there, lending him silent support. It felt great; Lex’s arm held him tightly and he could almost imagine it was more than just a friendly hug.
For the first time in days, Clark found himself relaxing and he started to drift off to sleep, feeling safe and comforted in Lex’s arms. On the edge of dropping off, he was shocked to feel a gentle kiss on his temple.
“Sleep well, my angel,” Lex whispered as he began to ease away.
Clark’s heart nearly stopped in shock. Lex? Lex *was* the one sending him the messages?! Oh God. “What?” he gasped, sitting up.
Lex froze for a second, then tried to get up quickly. But Clark was quicker and he wrapped his arms round his best friend, not letting him get away.
“Clark?” Lex breathed worriedly. “I didn’t… I mean, I thought you were asleep.”
“I guessed,” Clark smiled softly, looking away for a second before glancing up at Lex shyly through his eyelashes. “’ I feel the lack of your presence tangibly, my angel, when will I see you again?’” he quoted that day’s message.
Lex swallowed hard. “I… missed you,” he admitted nervously.
“God, Lex, why didn’t you just say something?” Clark asked, shaking his head, “Do you have any idea how much I wished the messages were from you?”
“You did?” Lex sounded shocked.
Clark nodded. “I love you, Lex.”
Lex shook his head, his expression not quite disbelieving, but definitely shocked. He tried to move again, “But, Clark, you…”
Clark shushed him, returning to his position snuggled against Lex’s shoulder. “I love you,” he said firmly, sighing happily as Lex settled back on the couch, hugging him tightly.
“I love you, my angel.”
